Part 2 Writing Task: A Good Manager . . . sample answer

Question: What are some important qualities of a good manager? Use specific details and examples to explain why these qualities are important.

Here is a high-scoring answer

Most of us, whatever our jobs or positions, have to work under somebody else, who acts as a leader, manager, or supervisor. And most of us in turn will at some point also be in that kind of supervisory position, with people under us. Therefore, the qualities of such a person are important for everyone to understand.

Managers have to manage, which means they must organize an array of tasks and people to get those tasks done. In a software company I once worked at, my team-leader was totally disorganized and inefficient and couldn’t keep up with the progress of his team. His hands-on approach meant that he didn’t delegate any responsibility, which increased both his workload and stress level which in turn decreased his performance. As a result, although he was technically proficient, he was moved to a position with less responsibility.

Inter-personal skills are also vital. The replacement team-leader was altogether different. He was friendly and co-operative, always ready to listen to his subordinates. And although he wasn’t nearly as smart as the previous manager, he led with confidence and inspired greater teamwork.

In conclusion, in order to do a good job, a manager must have many qualities. He must not only be knowledgeable and have technical skill in his field, but he must also be attentive to the needs of those who work for him.
